Bringing Art and Social Issues to Life with Taking it Outdoors - Kids
At the Denali Foundation, we believe that art has the power to spark conversations, build community, and empower individuals—especially children. That's why we are thrilled to support the Taking it Outdoors - Kids project at Washington Elementary School in Point Richmond, California.
Washington Elementary, a vibrant Spanish-English immersion school, serves around 500 children from preschool through sixth grade. Like many schools, it has struggled with limited funding for creative endeavors, particularly in the arts. That’s where the Denali Foundation steps in, providing much-needed art supplies that enable this inspiring project to flourish.
The Taking it Outdoors - Kids project invites students to explore and express their thoughts on positive actions and community values through art. Guided by a passionate team of 17 teachers, coordinators Kenoli Oleari and Sharon Goods, and four dedicated volunteers, the students dive into topics that matter to them—such as kindness, taking care of the environment, and the importance of helping others.
What makes this project truly unique is its outdoor display of student artwork. Select pieces are transformed into stunning 40x40-inch vinyl banners that adorn the schoolyard fences and are also exhibited in the community's public square during the summer. These vibrant, impactful banners not only give the students a voice but also engage the entire community in thoughtful discussions about the issues these young artists care deeply about.
At the Denali Foundation, we’re honored to play a part in bringing this meaningful work to life. By providing art supplies, we’re helping Washington Elementary School bridge the gap in funding and giving these talented students the opportunity to express themselves in bold, creative ways.
